The Wisdom of ‘Maybe’: A Story About Horses and Life’s Curveballs
The Story of the Farmer and His Horse
There’s an old story that goes like this:
A farmer’s horse runs away. His neighbors rush over: “What terrible luck!” The farmer shrugs. “Maybe.” A few days later, the horse returns—bringing with it a pack of wild horses. “What wonderful luck!” the neighbors cheer. The farmer just nods. “Maybe.”
Later, while taming one of the new horses, the farmer’s son falls and breaks his leg. “Such awful luck!” cry the neighbors. The farmer replies, “Maybe.” Not long after, a war breaks out. All the young men in the village are called to fight, but the farmer’s son, with his broken leg, is spared.
The neighbors finally stop trying to predict what things mean.
What This Story Teaches Us
The heart of this story is that life doesn’t always show its cards right away. What feels like the end of the world today could turn out to be the very thing that opens up a better tomorrow. And sometimes what seems amazing in the moment brings its own set of challenges.
It’s a reminder not to rush to label every event as “good” or “bad.” Sometimes the wisest, healthiest response is just: “Maybe.”
How This Plays Out in Real Life
Think about the little things that throw us off balance. You get stuck in traffic, and your brain jumps straight to: “This is the worst day ever.” But maybe that traffic jam saves you from something worse down the road. Or you miss out on a job, only to find one a month later that fits you perfectly.
We’re quick to judge in the moment because it feels safer to put things in boxes. But the truth is, we don’t know yet. And admitting we don’t know can actually bring a lot of peace.
Why It’s Worth Practicing
Life is stressful enough without us piling on extra suffering by deciding instantly that every inconvenience is a disaster. The farmer still had to feed his animals and take care of his son, but he wasted less energy stressing over whether each twist in the story was a blessing or a curse.
What if you could borrow that mindset? Next time your day takes an unexpected turn; your flight gets delayed, your laptop crashes, or you spill coffee on yourself right before a meeting, pause and say: “Maybe.” Who knows? That delay might give you time to call an old friend. That coffee stain might spark a funny story you tell for years.
Even if nothing “lucky” comes of it, at least you haven’t drained yourself fighting against the moment.
Takeaway:
We don’t always get to choose what happens, but we can choose how quickly we judge it. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for yourself is to stop rushing to declare whether something is good or bad, and leave room for “maybe.”
